Sydney L.: You know that person who does more in a day than you do in a week? That’s Sydney. We go to the same school, have a number of mutual friends in common, and after seeing her enough times on campus (and half a dozen university publications), I made my intro and set up a shoot. While Sydney wears a number of hats (always liked that phrase), she’s big into politics and will probably (read definitely) be on a political ballot within in the next decade. Below she’s photographed on her way to brunch a few weekends back during one of DC’s oppressive heat waves.
“I believe in breaking new ground. Sheryl Sandberg, Samantha Power, Barba Boxer, Tina Brown, and Nancy Pelosi have one thing in common– they are women in history-making positions of power. Women in politics break barriers every day and a new understanding of what power can look and sound like is rising. Being a female in politics no longer means pants suits are a must. My style is finding the delicate balance of being a young woman in Washington. I wear a skirt and heels with confidence knowing that I am being taken as seriously as the policy memo I published on nuclear warfare. At 7 a.m. I might be debating between outfits but by 9 a.m. I’m already covering a hearing on Capitol Hill.”
